The relevant difference between cooperatives and other companies with a different governance is the cooperatives´ MemberValue strategy. This applies especially to cooperative banks. While this basic characterictic is uncontested, the ways how the MemberValue strategy can be implemented may (and should) differ for individual cooperative banks.
This working paper presents a conceptualization of a MemberValue strategy and an empirical investigation into the implementation of the MemberValue strategy. For this purpose more than 2000 cooperative bank members completed a comprehensive questionnaire providing a solid basis for the empirical analysis. Recommendation for banks intending to implement a MemberValue strategy are given.
